2022 Women's State League Grand Final Report
Published Tue 13 Dec 2022
On Friday December 9th, The Fremantle Mariners were crowned 2022 Women's State League Premiers.
After a 1-7 win in Game 1 on the previous day, Game 2 came down to the last inning, with the Mariners clinching the premiership with a 4-3 win over the Thornlie Hawks. Over the course of what was an exhilerating season, filled with upsets, tight finishes, and an incredible finals series, the Mariners came into the 3-game Grand Final Series as the underdogs after finishing 2nd on the ladder, followed by a loss to Thornlie in the first Final. Thornlie incredibly held top spot on the ladder for the last 7 rounds, rightfully earning themselves a Grand Final appearance. Fremantle's season looked over after 3 losses in thier first 3 matches, however, with the likes of Aussie stars Tamieka Whitefield and Leah Parry, alongside some exciting young talent in Haylee Nelson, Eva O'Loughlan, Jocelyn Mortimer, Kasey Shaw and Cameron Bilsborough, The Mariner's went on a 7 game unbeaten run in the lead up to finals, winning six and drawing one.
Thornlie Hawks also had some stars of their own, bringing imports from the USA, Justus Perry and Makenna Dowell, paired with State Players Ashlyn Hayes, Sharnee Haereroa and Amber Hinchliffe, there’s no wonder the Hawks were a force in the competition. Only falling short in the Grand Final.
The 2022 Women’s State League Season was a fantastic showcase of the great players that are developing in WA, putting the State’s best female players against each other in preparation for the National Championships this summer. The level of gameplay and competition was extremely high all around, with 5 of the 6 teams battling it out on the final day for a spot in the finals.
Here at Softball WA, we are extremely pleased with the competition in 2022, looking to take it up another level in 2023, hoping to introduce more teams into the mix. Thank you to all of the teams, players, officials and umpires involved in the competition.
